April is Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month, highlighting a diverse group of diseases that account for nearly 5% of all cancers in the United States and impact tens of thousands of patients each year. Risk factors include tobacco and alcohol use, along with certain high-risk strains of human papillomavirus. Warning signs can include a persistent neck mass, a nonhealing mouth sore, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness and unexplained weight loss. At UCI Health, patients receive expert multidisciplinary care at Orange County’s only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center. The Head and Neck Oncologic Program provides advanced surgical treatment, access to clinical trials and immunotherapy, transoral robotic surgery for HPV-related cancers, and complex reconstructive procedures that help restore function and preserve quality of life.
