UC Irvine study examines brain health in the oldest-old

A UC Irvine–led study published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia challenges traditional assumptions about vascular risk factors and brain health in adults aged 90 and older. Researchers found that conditions such as hypertension and diabetes were not associated with increased brain blood vessel damage in this population.

The study also identified an association between the use of certain cardiovascular medications and lower rates of cerebral vascular pathology. Led by Ravi Rajmohan, MD, PhD, the findings highlight the complexity of brain aging and support more individualized approaches to care in the oldest?old population.
