UCI Health advances culturally tailored diabetes care model for Latino/a communities

diabetes

UCI Health and UC Irvine are advancing a redesigned model for diabetes research and care in the Latino/a community, emphasizing culturally informed, community-engaged strategies to address longstanding disparities. The initiative integrates prevention, treatment and research while actively involving patients and community stakeholders to improve trust, access and clinical outcomes.

It also targets key social determinants of health such as language barriers, transportation and cultural considerations that can limit the effectiveness of traditional care models. Leaders describe the effort as a shift from fragmented approaches toward a more coordinated, partnership-driven framework aimed at reducing inequities and improving long-term outcomes in a population disproportionately affected by diabetes.
