The importance of robust genomic testing for patients

Misako Nagasaka, MD, PhD, board-certified UCI Health oncologist who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of lung and thyroid cancers, stopped by the booth to share how precision oncology has fundamentally shifted the landscape through the identification of actionable genomic targets for lung cancer treatment.

She emphasized the importance of robust genomic testing to ensure patients receive the appropriate targeted inhibitors. Data has been revealed that the median progression-free survival for patients with ALK-positive non-small cell lung cancer treated with lorlatinib in the frontline setting has not yet been reached, offering profound reassurance that these patients can achieve long-term, durable remission.

While this confirms existing practice, Nagasaka noted the emotional and clinical weight of seeing such sustained survival curves, validating the power of third-generation ALK inhibitors in turning a once-devastating diagnosis into a manageable chronic condition.
