Lisa Gibbs, MD discusses a year of advancements in geriatrics at Orange County's only academic medical center

Dear Colleague,

U.S. News & World Report and its partner Doximity have opened their annual physician survey to help determine the 2024-25 America’s Best Hospitals and specialty rankings.

At UCI Health, we are dedicated to providing high-quality, comprehensive care for older adults, ensuring they receive the best possible support across all settings. Our commitment extends beyond clinical care to include leadership in geriatric education, research, advocacy, and community outreach.

Our interdisciplinary team at UCI Geriatrics offers flexible, on-demand training on Age-Friendly 4-M geriatric care: What Matters Most, Mentation, Medication, and Mobility. We are proud to lead national models in older-adult and community-engaged research, geriatric healthcare, digital health ecosystems, disaster resilience, and elder abuse prevention.

One of our key initiatives, Dementia Care Aware, provides primary care providers with the training, tools, and resources needed to conduct cognitive health assessments. Through ECHO sessions, webinars, podcasts, and region-specific events, Dementia Care Aware equips healthcare teams to better serve Medi-Cal patients aged 65 and older. Our vision at UCI Health is to improve the health and well-being of older adults through innovative care, education, and research, ensuring that all individuals receive exceptional geriatric care.

Expanding Access to Advanced Geriatric Care

At UCI Health, we are committed to delivering high-quality, comprehensive care across all settings and providing leadership in geriatric education, research, advocacy, and community outreach. Our interdisciplinary team addresses the changing health needs of older adults and their caregivers.

Innovative Education & Training

UCI Geriatrics offers flexible, on-demand classes for all learners on Age-Friendly 4-M geriatric care: What Matters Most, Mentation, Medication, and Mobility.

Pioneering Research & Community Engagement

Our Geriatric team has been forging national models for older-adult and community-engaged research, geriatric healthcare, digital health ecosystems, disaster resilience, and elder abuse prevention. Our team of 10 faculty members is dedicated to partnering with older adults and communities to generate research breakthroughs. Over the past 32 years, we have trained 42 geriatricians and received 50 grants.

Dementia Care Aware Initiative

Dementia Care Aware is a new statewide initiative led by the University of California, San Francisco, in partnership with the University of California, Irvine. It provides training, tools, and resources for primary care providers (PCPs) on conducting cognitive health assessments. The initiative offers training opportunities through ECHO sessions, webinars, podcasts, and region-specific events.

Dementia Care Aware is designed for all PCPs and their healthcare teams. PCPs who serve Medi-Cal patients 65 and older who are not also on Medicare can now bill for conducting a cognitive health assessment after completing this Dementia Care Aware online training.

Our Vision for the Future

At UCI Health, our vision is clear: to improve the health and well-being of older adults through innovative care, education, and research. As we continue to expand access, advance research, and redefine the future of geriatric care, we remain committed to delivering exceptional care to our community.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support. Learn more & cast your ballot.
